3. The liger is a living thing because...

(a) Grow and Develop

Males reach a total length of 3 to 3.5m. Females reach 3.05m (10ft) long on average. The male ligers weigh around 340kg (750lb) and about 45cm height. The female ligers weigh approximately 320kg (720lb). Ligers do not grow all of their life but their growth rate is really faster than growth rate of the lions and tigers. The ligers grow bigger with in a small span of time. Ligers usually gain the maximum growth at age of 6.

(b) Reproduce

Ligers are a hybrid breed. The male ligers are typically sterile (no sperm) and have low amount of testosterone. The female ligers are fertile but obviausly cannot mate with their male ligers. Ligers can have liger cubs, if a male lion or tiger mates with a female liger. The everage gestation period, for ligers can range from 93 to 112 days.

The liger looks like a giant lion, which has muted stripes similar to tigers. Ligers have a larger body, compared to both its parents. The head of a liger looks more like a lion's head, and the tail is more like that of lion. But, ligers have no trace of a mane. The face of a liger may have rosettes, which are the round marking seen on a leopards body. These making can be black, dark brown or sandy in color. The background color may be sandy, golden or tawny. And common to tigers, the under parts of ligers are pale.

(b) Behavioral Characteristics

Ligers inherit behavioral characteristics of lions as well as that of tigers. Most ligers are great swimmers which is a quality of the tiger. They tend to be very sociable similar to lions. Ligers are friendly and playful.

(b) Shelter:

Ligers don't exist in nature, only in parks and zoos. They get what they need from their zoo keepers. A Liger's habitat is only under captivity. This is because the habitats of the parental species cannot be related in the wild.

(c) Food:

Ligers eat deer, gazelles, wild boars, fish, frogs, crabs and grass to aid digestion. Since ligers are large cats weighing more than 1000 pounds, they need a lot of food on the daily basis. It is estimated that a liger requires at least 30 pounds of meats. Liger could easily eat a hundred pound offoodin a sitting but they tends to gain a little extra weight so zoo keeper feed them about 25 pound offood a night. Anyone can't eat ligers because human made them and they live in zoo.
